TITLE:
Making compounds

OBJECTIVE:
# To make a compound out of 2 elements.
# To observe of the compound has the same properties as the elements that made it.

HYPOTHESIS:
I think the compound will not have the same properties because when they combined together, a new substance will produce. I think the properties of the compound would be: It's solid, hard and it will not have a reaction with magnet.

MATERIALS:

Goggles (2): For protecting your eyes from accident.

Fe(iron) and S Mixture(sulphate): To make a new compound.

Test tube(1): We put Fe and S mixture inside, then burn it.

Test tube holder(1): For holding the test tube because it's very hot when burning the Fe and S mixture.

Bunsen Burner(1): For burning the Fe and S mixture.

Heat proof mat(1): We put Bunsen Burner on top of it. It will absorb heat from Bunsen Burner.

Magnet(1): It's use to test is the compound we made have reaction with it. That means will it have the same properties of the elements that made it.

Rubber band: For tiding up long hair.

Weighting boat(1): We put the compound on it, and weight.

The iron powder stands up.

It do not have reaction with magnet.

PROCEDURE:
1. Set up the bunsen burner.

2. Light up the bunsen burner

3. Put the test tube with Fe and S mixture and wool at opening on top of the fire.

The Fe powder in the mixture is melting
4. Wait for the Fe and S mixture to melt.

5. The mixture is turning to red colour.  If we take off the wool at the opening now, it will be very smelly.

6. Wait until the compound cold down, then take off the wool at the opening of the test tube. And get the compound out.

7. Use a magnet to test if the compound have a reaction with it.

GUIDE QUESTIONS:

1. Did your results support your hypothesis? Why or why not?
The result do not support my hypothesis, because the compound has reaction with magnet.

2. What do you think the compound is called?
I think it's called FeS. The proper name of the compound is Iron Sulfide. Fe+S=FeS.

3. What did you learn from this experiment?
I had learnt that the compound would remain the properties of the elements that made it.

4. From a scale of 1 to 10, rate your participation in this experiment and explain why.
Not available.

5. From a scale of 1 to 10, rate your partner's participation in this experiment and explain why.
Not available.

6. How can you improve this experiment?
Try to attend the experiment and ask for classmate who have video of the experiment.
